What is fire pole?

A fire pole is a long vertical pole that is commonly found in fire stations. Firefighters use the pole to quickly slide down from the living quarters to the ground level in emergencies. This allows them to respond to a fire alarm or call for help in a timely manner.

Fire poles are typically made of metal, such as steel or brass, and are securely attached to the floor and ceiling of the fire station. They are designed to be sturdy enough to support the weight of a fully equipped firefighter sliding down at high speeds.

Using a fire pole requires training and practice to ensure safety. Firefighters are trained to properly grip the pole, control their descent, and safely reach the bottom without injury.

Although fire poles are a traditional and iconic feature of fire stations, not all modern fire stations have them. Some newer stations have opted for staircases or elevators instead, citing safety concerns and accessibility issues.
